Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting up with Lavinia Moore, owner of Events in a Box, to visit Delpare Abbey in Northampton. Delapré Abbey, or more properly, the Abbey of St Mary de la Pré, was an English monastery situated in the meadows of the River Nene to the south of Northampton. What a magnificant example of our heritage! The Abbey is under a terrible state of repair. How on earth this wonderful piece of heritage was allowed to get into this state is beyond me!
Luckily there are fantastic volunteers who are trying to raise awareness and raise much needed funds to enable this building and it’s beautiful gardens to be restored to it’s former glory.
A volunteer group, “The Friends of Delapré Abbey” FODA runs a tea room on the premises. This helps attract visitors to the building and its grounds. The organisation was granted charitable status in June 2006.
Yesterday Lavinia and I met at the tearooms to sample the lunch and hospitality of the tearoom and we were NOT disappointed! The ploughman’s lunch with lots of choice was amazing! A huge block of stilton alongside cheddar and salad with 2 lovely rolls!
After putting the wedding world to rights (and the rest of the world for that matter!!) we went for a stroll around the beautiful gardens. What a treat!
Took some photos for you to enjoy!
Introducing the tearooms:
The Abbey itself – just to give you an idea of the disrepair – will it prompt you to help?
